"I've already given up so much…" — debt as an invisible tab
A sense of obligation is the heaviest currency. The "pity as currency" technique: you constantly remind everyone how much you invested, gave, endured — and turn it into an invisible tab the people around you feel obligated to pay. Not "give me," but "after everything I've done for you…"
"I'm not asking for anything. It's just… after everything I've done, it feels a little strange to me that [the thing you're doing right now]."
The Martyr, under threat of being voted out:
Go ahead, vote. I don't object. I stayed quiet the whole game, gave my ration to the new guy, gave up my bed. I guess that's how it goes — the one who carries everyone on his back is the first one thrown overboard. Don't worry about me. I'm used to being used.
Now voting him out = confirming that you're an ungrateful pig. You can't bring yourself to raise your hand.
- Work"I stay every weekend, nobody asks me to, of course… but okay" — and it feels awkward to say no.
- Family"I gave up my whole life for you" — closes any argument about boundaries.
- Friendship"I always dropped everything to come the second you called…" — and you're already on your way.
Trigger: Past good deeds are presented as a bill due in the present, and "selflessly" at that — "I'm not asking for anything."
Counter: "Thank you for everything you've done, truly. That's a separate conversation. Right now we're deciding this specific question on its merits."
A debt you can't count doesn't exist.
I never ask directly — that's a weak position. I just list my sacrifices and go quiet. After that, your conscience is out of my hands. It works for me for free.
